Maleny Dairy defies downturn in milk market

It is now 16 years since the Hopper family opened Maleny Dairies processing plant.

The business is continuing its slow and steady expansion and is set to sign a contract with a ninth farmer supplier.

“Our sales are going good, our customers are demanding that we keep it up and we’re looking for the ninth one shortly,” Ross Hopper said.

“We’ve got a list of farmers that have put their hands up over the years on the waiting list; we’ve just got to time it right and obviously, when they’ve finished their contracts, they can come across.

“We processed 49,000 litres on Monday. That’s a lot of milk locally coming into the factory.”

I heard on the tv a new dairy farm had started up on the sunshine coast to supply you with milk. is this the case or just one coming to you from another company? Whichever, it is great news. I contacted you a few years back to find out where to buy your milk and am delighted to find it in coles at Strathpine. Also, my butchery at Deagon sells it as well, so I am having no trouble getting it. Have been telling all who will listen that people power is winning and Aussie companies are being supported and encouraging them to buy Aussie produced. People generally are being more selective about where their food comes from, so keep up the good work whatever you are doing you are winning. Maybe in a few years you will start up a powdered milk company and this will help with evening out the supply problem as excess could be powdered. Toowoomba is now flying produce overseas and the darling downs is trying to start tinning beetroot, so small business is winning good luck for the future.

The only milk I buy is the Maleny brand in the hope that I contribute (albeit in a very small way) to the sustainability of local dairy farmers.

Great to see the Maleny Dairy doing well. We now buy our milk from our local shop and it is delicious.
We don’t like the way Coles & Woolworths treat their suppliers and would like to see more small suppliers come into the market.
We are quite prepared to pay a small amount more for such a good quality product.
